    What Is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that occurs when a person’s breathing is repeatedly interrupted during sleep. The word “apnea” literally means “without breath.” There are two main types of sleep apnea: obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common type and occurs when the muscles in the back of the throat fail to keep the airway open, despite the effort to breathe. This can cause a person to snore loudly or make choking or gasping sounds during sleep.

Central sleep apnea (CSA) is less common and occurs when the brain fails to send the proper signals to the muscles that control breathing. This can cause a person to stop breathing for brief periods during sleep.

Sleep apnea can have a number of negative effects on a person’s health, including fatigue, daytime sleepiness, poor concentration, and an increased risk of accidents. It can also lead to more serious health problems, such as high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

Treatment options for sleep apnea include lifestyle changes, such as weight loss and avoiding alcohol and sedatives, as well as the use of devices such as continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines or oral appliances that help keep the airway open during sleep. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to correct the underlying cause of the sleep apnea.
